The School and its Mission

 Celebrating its 70th year in 2016, Escuela Americana El Salvador (EA) is a private, coeducational non-profit day school located in the capital city of El Salvador. EA serves over 1400 students in PK-12 across three Divisions. The student body consists of 76% host nationals, 16% are from North America and 8% represent 20 other countries. There are 134 full-time faculty, and 73% are host nationals.

The mission of EA is to provide a rigorous bilingual, bicultural college preparatory curriculum that allows students to meet the academic admission criteria for competitive U.S., Salvadoran and international colleges and universities. More than 90% of EA’s students earn the demanding U.S./Bachillerato dual diploma. Of the 94 students in the Class of 2016, 60% planned to study in the U.S, four were accepted to Ivy League institutions and there were fourteen AP Scholars.

While academic rigor is the School’s primary focus, EA also seeks to provide each student with a sound basis for life as a responsible member of society through its commitment to the development of the whole child. The Opportunity

EA seeks a General Director who will develop, refine and promote the mission of the School to all constituents resulting in a school that exemplifies the values of Commitment to Excellence, Respect for Oneself and Others; High Hopes and Expectations, Learning from Each Other, Shared Responsibility and Moral Courage. The ideal candidate will have experience in leading a large school in a multicultural, bilingual environment. International experience is a plus. He or she will have earned an advanced degree and demonstrate evidence of other intellectual pursuits and professional growth.

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the General Director will be expected to:

  1. Supervise and coordinate the daily operations of the Senior Management Team by establishing clear reporting relationships and set the tone for a whole child educational program.
  2. Oversee the implementation of long term strategic planning that reflects the School’s goals and results in the execution of the mission of the school.
  3. Develop and implement an ongoing plan to attract a world class faculty to EA.
  4. Oversee the assignment, evaluation, training, encouragement and motivation of the teaching staff through the three School Directors in order to build an excellent faculty which is consistently growing and improving.
  5. Create a positive learning experience for students by partnering with faculty to determine students’ most important needs and ensuring that policies are in place to meet those needs.
  6. Monitor cultural trends in the School by being involved consistently in the daily life of the School as an observer and as a participant in developing policies that create a culture that produces responsible members of society.
  7. Oversee the development of a curriculum that represents best practice and innovation by working with the Curriculum Committee and the faculty.
  8. Interact and build relationships with other educational leaders of like-minded institutions in the broader academic community such as those belonging to NAIS, AASCA, and the TRI-ASSOCIATION; research their best practices; and implement them at EA as needed and appropriate.
  9. Work with the Finance Committee of the Board and the Finance Director to draft and revise a budget that results in a financial model for a school that operates within its means.
  10. Assist in the effort to grow the applicant pool by meeting with prospective families especially from key feeder Schools in order to promote the brand of academic excellence and development of the whole child.

The Primary teaches a school-based dual-language curriculum with equal time devoted to English and Chinese. The Lower Secondary now follows the IB Middle Years Programme (IBMYP) and the Upper Secondary follows the IB Diploma Programme (IBDP) curriculum. The School is guided by its Mission Statement:

The first programme of its kind, CIS invites students in Year 10/Grade 9 to spend a year immersed in Chinese culture and language. Simultaneously, they pursue their English education by following the IBMYP. Hangzhou CIS is located on the campus of its partner school, Greentown Yuhua School, a leading private school in the Zhejiang province.

As a dual-language school, CIS is unusual in that neither of its two languages is predominant in the Hong Kong community where Cantonese is most commonly spoken. Students thrive and excel in this dual-language environment. In 2016, 108 students were candidates for the full IB Diploma, and their pass rate was 100%, with an average Diploma score of 38.6 (out of 45). Four CIS students achieved the maximum score of 45, and three students received 44 points. 48 students (44%) scored 40 and above. All of the 108 students scored 30 or higher. After Secondary, students go on to attend and succeed at the finest universities in the world.

CIS has always held the growth of the child as a whole person at the centre of its mission. At CIS all students and staff learn about Positive Education which seeks to build resilience by bolstering each person’s ability to cope with challenges based on an understanding of his/her signature strengths and by developing other tools and strategies.

CIS is in a very strong financial condition. It has the unique distinction in the region of having a highly successful Annual Giving Programme launched in 2009. A Team of 150 Parent Advocates helped the School to raise HK$16 million in 2015-16, with 65% parent participation.

The physical plant is state of the art and further improvements are in the works. A new 10-story building opened in August 2016 with two full Gyms, one of which is convertible to an Assembly Hall, and a Science and Technology Hub focused around an Atrium. Additional work ending in late 2018 will result in a larger Cafeteria and Library as well as extensive new learning spaces for both Primary and Secondary. The School has raised more than HK$450 million towards this estimated HK$600 million campus redevelopment project. The number of donors thus far has been equally split between parents and alumni – a remarkable achievement for a relatively young school that attests to the loyalty of the alumni base.

The Chinese International School seeks a Head of Secondary who is a proven educational leader with the ability to inspire and bring out the best in faculty, students and parents; has a track record of building engaging, collaborative and innovative learning environments and programmes; is passionate about educational research and curriculum development; demonstrates a longstanding commitment to student well-being, learning and personal growth; has a deep interest in dual-language education; and identifies strongly with the School’s multicultural mission and vision. The successful candidate will have earned an advanced degree and held one or more senior management positions. The ability to speak Mandarin is a plus, but is not a requirement. Fluency in more than one language would be an asset.

Reporting to the Headmaster, the Head of Secondary will be a member of the leadership team. Among his or her roles and responsibilities, he or she will be expected to:

  • Oversee the continued excellence and continuous improvement of teaching and learning in the Secondary school, with special attention to CIS-specific initiatives, in addition to well-established IB MYP and DP programmes;
